At least an Open water certification is needed to be able to immerse in the cenote and cavern diving, along with a good buoyancy control. If you do not have such certification, there are many places in Tulum where you can find many options to take the curse, and the tests, and acquire the certification. It is very important that you check that the place you chose has all the certifications needed to provide this curse and to certify you.
The difference between the cavern diving and the cave diving may sound simple, but not knowing it can become the difference between life and death. When you go into a cavern, you will never stop having sunlight, which means that you will always have the surface available, meanwhile the cave diving gets deeper into those places unreachable for the sunlight, and where there is no contact with the surface anymore.
